About Us

Our thriving community

Ipswich High School is a vibrant day and boarding school for boys and girls aged 3-18, set in an idyllic 87-acre campus in Woolverstone on the banks of the River Orwell.

With approximately 500 pupils, we are a small school with amazing facilities. We have small classes of hard-working pupils and inspirational teachers who help to instil a love of learning, the results of which are exceptional academic outcomes year on year.

At Ipswich High School, we understand that the world today requires young people to be so much more than simply good at passing exams. Our vision is to prepare our pupils to thrive in the 21st Century by providing them with the educational foundations to flourish.

To have discovered and become the best versions of themselves and to play an empowering part in our local and wider communities.

Happy

With who they are now and feel equipped for the world they are entering.

Successful

Having achieved outcomes which would have been impossible in any other school. To have gone beyond what they previously thought was possible.

“We believe in getting to know every pupil and build positive relationships to ensure that everyone in our community is inspired, happy and successful and above all building the foundations to flourish.”

Our Vision

Ipswich High School is a historic and highly successful school, and we are proud of our heritage dating back to 1878. We recognise the changes that have taken place in our recent history offer unique opportunities to further develop the world-class experience we provide for our pupils. By 2028, our school will have continued to support pupils to make excellent academic progress through a bespoke and connected curriculum. We have a love of tradition and a passion for progress.

Our Values

We value a holistic approach to educating young people. Academic excellence sits carefully alongside an embedded enrichment programme that grows and develops based on pupilsโ€™ needs.

Our community celebrates diversity and values kindness above all else. IHS values, created by our pupils and staff, help to guide us, focus our development and underpin our daily lives.

Through our IHS charity, we partner with the Royal National Childrenโ€™s SpringBoard Foundation to support access to independent education. This is part of the moral imperative that drives us.

Our Team

The quality of learning at Ipswich High School is a testament to the expertise and commitment of all the staff at the school. Our teachers, Heads of Department, members of the leadership teams along with support staff can share ideas, experiences and best practices with colleagues, feeding into and enhancing the learning experience at Ipswich High School.

Our Heritage

Ipswich High School was founded in 1878 out of a strong passion for education, with Miss Sophie Youngman being the first headmistress of our school. The first site of the school was in the Assembly Rooms in Northgate Street, with the very first pupil count being 43 pupils. For nearly 150 years, our school has continued to grow and provide a tailored education for our students, emphasising the individuality of every pupil that studies here, providing the foundations to flourish.

ISI Reports

Our latest Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) Report was overwhelmingly positive.
